Adolescent Chemical Dependency Intensive Outpatient Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program is for adolescents who are abusing drugs and/or alcohol. All sessions are completed within a group setting, because research shows that adolescents respond more positively in a group environment.  Most adolescents who begin the Intensive Outpatient Program do not believe their substance usage is a problem and/or they are ambivalent about sobriety.  The goal of the program is to help patients determine their usage is problematic, to assist them in developing skills to remain clean and sober, and to expose them to clean and sober fun.  The program uses a family systems model and strongly encourages weekly parental/guardian participation.  Parental/guardian involvement is an important factor in reaching a successful outcome for adolescents abusing substances.

The Intensive Outpatient Program meets three times per week for a total of eight weeks. The group sessions meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. In addition, all patients who complete the program are encouraged to take part in the one year aftercare group offered weekly at CPH at no additional charge.

PROGRAM PHILOSPHY

The Adolescent CD-IOP at Centennial Hospital is based upon the understanding that the use of mood‑altering substances manifests itself in a number of negative ways, and that the patient may be unwilling or unable to see the negative impact.  The goal of the program is to assist patients in identifying how their usage has affected them physically, psychologically, socially, and educationally, as well as to help them develop positive coping skills to enjoy life.  Furthermore, the program helps parents cope with the having a child who is addicted to substances and assists the parents in creating structure and healthy boundaries in their lives.

GOALS FOR TREATMENT

The goals of treatment in this program include: Interrupting the drug/alcohol use cycle; Identifying and changing negative behavioral patterns; Establishing healthy communication patterns with parents; Developing positive coping skills; Establishing positive, fun activities; Identifying and encouraging lifestyle changes necessary to support continued recovery; and identifying signals or relapse triggers.
